Research overview
Our research aims to understand the physiology of vascular function and blood flow to translate findings into clinical understanding and applications for disease treatment. Our primary focus is the characterisation of the pathophysiological processes of coronary artery disease. We use powerful image processing techniques and computational and experimental modelling of patient-specific clinical data. Personalised modelling pipelines are developed to help early disease diagnosis and improve treatment strategies through outcome predictions. We closely collaborate with clinicians.

Current research projects
Coronary Atlas
Just like we come in all different sizes and shapes, our arteries do too. Our team accounts for such individual differences by developing the largest database of coronary artery population vessel shape and flow to date. This leads to advanced insights and reveals high-risk patients.
Stent Strategy
Stent implants are not always easy. Some patients’ vessels are challenging to implant a stent into and for some lesions, there is still no consensus on the best stenting strategy. Our team is investigating these knowledge gaps.
Stent Design
Many different stent designs are currently on the market worldwide. However, it is not clear which design is the best. Multi-object design considerations can reveal some of the trade-offs in current design concepts.
Risk prediction
Deep learning is the most powerful machine learning subset, especially for our medical image processing. Using the large database available, we aim to identify early disease markers.
Personalised treatment
The future of medicine is precise. We aim to increase understanding of individual differences and how these may affect cardiovascular health.
Get involved
Faculty members, industry, graduate school students or students looking for graduate programs, we want to hear from you. We are recruiting under-and postgraduate bioengineering students and offering PhD bioengineering scholarships. Joint PhD projects are also possible. Biomedical engineering Post-Doc inquiries are also encouraged.
Faculty members, industry and clinicians are encouraged to reach out. Especially if you are working in biomedical engineering and cardiovascular sciences, but also in tissue engineering, life sciences, stem cell engineering and general stem cells in biological systems and are interested in collaborating across biomedical engineering for cardiovascular health.
We are a large and diverse group of motivated researchers and students from various educational backgrounds. To learn more about the team and if your skill sets could match, see our current researchers and students here.
We strive to make a significant impact by discovering novel technologies and treatments for coronary artery disease. You or your organisation can support our research through donations and philanthropic funding directly through the UNSW Alumni & Giving campaign.
