UNSW medical researcher Dr Beier wins Heart Foundation grant →

Dr Beier will use the funding to explore personalised treatment approaches to heart attack stenting.

“Heart disease is the most common cause of death globally and kills one Australian every 27 minutes. Narrowed coronary arteries can be treated by implanting a stent – a mesh metal tube which reopens the vessel. But up to 160,000 stent patients worldwide develop complications – from blood clots to unwanted tissue growth,” Dr Beier said.

“My research will explore a personalised treatment approach, where individual shape differences are accounted for. These shapes can be explored by using the latest analysis, blood flow simulations and 3D soft printing,” Dr Beier continued.

International practicum visit

My name is Vishesh Kashyap and I am currently a final year biomedical engineering undergraduate student of Mechanical Engineering at Delhi Technological University, Delhi, India. I always had an interest in biological systems, medical imaging and general biomedical engineering. I was looking for research opportunities to prepare for a doctor of philosophy program with clinical applications. After looking at a range of research centers with bioengineering program and PhD program, I decided on this placement. I visited the University of New South Wales, Sydney in June-July 2019 as a Research Practicum Student under the supervision of faculty member Dr. Susann Beier.
